Belmont Blue captures volleyball crown in Nanaimo

Junior girls squad goes undefeated at Vancouver Island University tournament

The roll continues for the Belmont Blue junior girls volleyball team.

The Grade 9 and 10 squad captured the Vancouver Island University tournament title Saturday in Nanaimo, beating Notre Dame of Vancouver 2-0 (25-20, 25-11) in the championship match. The win came after Belmont knocked off Nanaimo District Secondary in the semifinals.

Blue coach Ken Lowe was moderately happy with the overall result, but said an even bigger test for his girls will come Nov. 6 and 7, when they travel to the South Delta tournament.

“For us it’s worth it to go, because we want to see what’s over there,” he said. “We’ve also got some tough exhibition matches coming up.”

Belmont White also competed at the 24-team VIU tournament and finished in the middle of the pack.

The junior girls head into their city playoffs next week. Royal Bay, which finished seventh in the A pool, takes on B pool sixth-place finisher St. Margaret’s in a pre-playoff challenge match next Monday (Nov. 2) to see which tournament they advance to. The winner of that match will play in the city A pool championships, which go Nov. 13-14 at Belmont.

Belmont White will play in the B pool tournament, Nov. 23 at an as-yet determined site.
