Belmont junior and senior girls volleyball teams continue to impress

Teams preparing for upcoming championships

The Belmont junior and senior girls volleyball teams are looking to bring their success from the regular season into the upcoming playoffs.

Junior girls head coach Ken Lowe said the season has gone well his squad.

“It’s going surprisingly well,” he said. “At the beginning of the year, I only really had a couple players that had much experience playing volleyball. We’re playing against a lot of teams, a lot of other schools that have quite a bit of experience and we’ve improved so much in the two months.”

In league play, the girls went 21-1 (in sets) in their pool. Lowe said he thinks the team is currently ranked third or fourth in the region.

“Our tournament results have gotten better each time we’ve played,” Lowe said. “A lot of other teams haven’t invested as much time playing extra weekends like we have. We’ve done some good things to improve our team and the kids have bought into a system of weekly practices and lots of tournaments.”

City playoffs for the junior girls started Monday at St. Michaels University and Claremont Secondary School. The top three teams from the day (determined after the Gazette’s press deadline) move on to play Wednesday at Belmont.

Island championships are scheduled for Nov. 17 and 18 at Claremont.

Meanwhile Belmont’s senior girls continued their strong play recently capturing the Vic Lindal Cup (the city league championship) after defeating Oak Bay in the final.

On Monday, the seniors also participated in the lower Island championships, with results determined after the Gazette’s press deadline. Belmont will also host the Island championships this year on Nov. 17 and 18.
