The Golden Cycling Club (GCC) is busy preparing for another season of downhill ripping, cross-country tearing, and simply cruising around. It sounds like it will be another busy trail-building season as well for the club, as they have a lot on their platter. From adding on to the already biker’s paradise Moonraker network to the potential forging an “epic trail”, action will not only be taking place on two wheels, but also with a pulaski in hand.
“We have a lot planned this season, but being a not-for-profit organization, what happens depends entirely on grants and how much funding we can bring in,” said Jason Romani, Media Relations Representative for GCC.
The club has some ambitious ideas regarding potential trails and they are certainly doable, that is if the GCC can once again hire a trail building crew for the summer, much like last year.
“Ideally, we would like to have a crew of around five people for three months every year. That way, out-of-town riders would know that we have the resources to keep up with the maintenance of all of our trails, inevitably drawing more people to town,” Romani added.
As for the “epic trail”, it is something the GCC has had in mind for some time now. Other cycling communities, specifically Seven Summits in Rossland, have “epic trails” and according to Romani, these types of trails are becoming more and more popular.
“Having an epic trail in town would make Golden even more of a biking destination than it currently is. It is another great opportunity to bring tourist dollars to the community,” explained Romani.
On April 20th the GCC will be holding its Annual General Meeting at the Kicking Horse River Lodge at 7pm. The club is inviting all cyclists out to learn of the club’s activities in town, to see what the club has in mind for new trails, to possibly sign up as a member (with new lower rates, including a family discount), or at the very least to enjoy a Bikeumentary titled Pedal Driven. The film will be making its Canadian debut, so be there to check it out and support your local bike club.
