Bryan Schenker celebrated his birthday by scoring twice as Turn-Key Controls Ogopogos toppled Tree Brewing 4-1 in Capri Insurance Men’s 45+ Soccer League playoff action Monday night at Beasley Park.
Jeff Nice and Henry Czerwonka also tallied in support of Mike Moorlag. The Tim Hortons Players of the Game for the Pogos were Schenker and Clint Dickenson.
Nice and Schenker, who rang up 18 goals in the regular season, pushed Turn-Key to a fast 2-0 lead on through balls from Dickenson.
The Brewers replied near the 23rd minute after a miscue at the 40-yard mark.
Schenker made a beautiful low feed through the seam to a breaking Czerwonka, who chipped it over the keeper for a 3-1 lead just before the recess.
Schenker nailed a second-half breakaway corker off the post but soon redeemed his miss with a nifty deke and shuffle around two defenders.
Regular-season champions Brown Benefits also won their opening-round playoff match by shutting down Bosman Accounting 4-0.
Tony Gonzales opened the scoring when he took Kelly Sherman’s terrific pass and beat keeper Yogi Kongsdorf with a deft chip. Tim Austen doubled the lead with a terrific left-footed shot to the top corner that caught everyone by surprise.
Just before halftime, Bosman’s captain Henk Bosman unleashed one of his patented blasts from the top of the penalty area but keeper Gord Regan made a spectacular save to hold the score into the break.
After some great play by Bosman in the second half, Browns won a corner on a counter attack and Brad Hauser headed home from the corner to make it 3-0. Steven Heiss completed the scoring late in the game when he sprung the offside trap on Sherman’s pass and slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
Kongsdorf recorded multiple stops to take the Dairy Queen Man of the Match for eighth-place Bosman.
Second-place Penticton United shelled seventh-place Soccer United 8-0 at Kings Park in the Peach City.
