In undoubtedly one of the most bizarre outcomes in Canadian boxing history, Williams Lake’s Stuart McLellan’s Saturday night Canadian Professional Boxing Council middleweight title fight in Moncton, N.B. ended with more questions than answers.
McLellan, who was undefeated heading into the fight with seven wins, zero losses and two draws, took on Kitchener, Ont.’s Julius Bunda (4-1).
There, Bunda was thought to be awarded a paper-thin unanimous decision (96-95, 96-95, 96-95) after both fighters went the full 10 rounds.
However, two hours after the fight, the New Brunswick Boxing Commission notified both McLellan and Bunda the scores for the fight had been added incorrectly.
The correct fight scores were: 95-95, 95-95 and 98-92 for McLellan, making the outcome of the fight a majority draw.
Regardless of the decision, reports from New Brunswick indicate fans at Casino New Brunswick hailed McLellan versus Bunda as fight of the night.
Based on the error by the commission, the title was declared vacant and a mandatory rematch has been ordered.
As of press deadline no date for a rematch had been set.
