Black Sheep dominate in win over Piggies

The Port Alberni Black Sheep beat visiting Cowichan Piggies 48–12 in Port Alberni last Saturday

Port Alberni Black Sheep head coach Jas Purewal is hoping his team is peaking at the right time, with a key game coming up this weekend against Nanaimo Hornets, and two games left in the fall season before the playoffs start.

The Black Sheep beat visiting Cowichan Piggies 48–12 in Port Alberni last Saturday to take over second place in the Vancouver Island Rugby Union standings.

“It sets up an exciting outing with Nanaimo this week as they’re undefeated this year and we’re sitting No. 2,” Purewal said. “It’s got huge implications. A win here guarantees us a playoff berth.”

Port Alberni’s only loss is to Nanaimo earlier in the fall rugby season.

“We’d really like to have some home playoff games,” Purewal added. “We haven’t in a couple of years.

“If we can keep things tight and slick when we want to attack…we should put in a good performance.”

The Sheep saw tries last Saturday from Anthony Selva with two, and singles from Peceli Leweni, James Cowan, John Symington, Ryan Turner and Ty Shannon. Shannon also had five conversions and one penalty kick.

SCRUM NOTES…The Black Sheep host Nanaimo Hornets this Saturday, Nov. 5 with a 1 p.m. kickoff at the rugby club.
