Blue Lightning stop Shuswap for first win

Vernon Blue Lightning ice Shuswap 6-3 for their first Bunny ringette win of the season.

Taliya Yamoaka scored a pair and added an assist as the Vernon Blue Lightning iced Shuswap 6-3 for their first Bunny ringette win of the season Saturday.

Rhys Taylor-Hawes, with a pair, Emily Balcaen, with her first goal of the season, and Kate Mallow completed the scoring. Brooklynn Charest and Jaida Sauvie each added assists.

Turning in solid offensive efforts were Gracie Balcaen, Miah Wargovcsik-Cohen and Tori Christensen. Isaac Granley, sisters Sasha and Shaila Austin, Hillary Quiring and Alicia Hughes also stepped up.

In other Bunny play, Paige Neufeld recorded her first-ever hat trick as the Vernon Shooting Stars toppled Kelowna #3 9-7 Sunday in Kelowna.

Brooklyn Young (2), Amber Lowe, Kyla Pyle, Chase Krause and Mackenzie Gilman also tallied for the Stars. Madison and Paige Edgar, Jordan Tung, Sierra Lochead, Brooklyn Mitchell-Tardiff, Alassa Johnson, Astrid Beaty and Makenna Jackson played their best games of the year. Emily Gilman  and Kennedy Jackson, in her debut, also played well.

Riley Pickrell (3+1) and Teigan Moore (2+2) had four-point nights as the Thompson Okanagan Junior AA team brushed back the Vernon A. Jacura Trucking Vernon Belles 7-2 Sunday at Priest Valley Vernon.

Alyx Rudderham and Taigen Radomske supplied the other goals in front of Tara MacMillan. Megan Weatherill recorded two assists.

Netminder Sarah Semph turned in a great performance for the Belles.

The Belles, who had an early goal waved off due to a crease call, got offence from Shelby Munk, assisted by call-up Dayna Hanley, and Hanley, taking a beautiful pass from call-up Alanna Fox.

Sydney Harder and Paige Webster also stepped up to join the Belles, whose goalie tandem of Genny Stevenson and Sarah Semph made many incredible saves.

The Swag’s Franziska Tietz had her first assist, and Emily Olds was stellar in net.

The Sunshine crew kept rolling with a 10-2 win over the West Kelowna Jets Sunday at PV.

Fox and Brenna Beck each fired 2+2, Bailey Williamson buried a pair, Webster and Sydney Harder each had a goal and assist, and Dayna Hanley and Desiree Turnball, with her first of the season, had singles.

The Vernon Newalta Tween A skated to a 6-6 draw with the Westside Junior B team Sunday night at Jim Lind Arena in West Kelowna.

Goals came from Kendra Ostafie (2), Hannah Popilchak (1+1), Maddie Powls (1+1), Saige Woodliffe (1+1) and Alex Drury. Shelby Connors and Katelyn Paulin also had assists.

Paulin, Drury, Saylor Martian and Maddy Percy played strong defence in front of Garrett Adams.

In Tween C play, the Nixon Wenger Invaders got stellar netminding from Madison Johnson and strong defence from Spencer Christensen, Tamara Nicol, Chelsea Landry and Ava Cornell in a 6-2 win over Kelowna Sunday.

Marika Monroe fired the first two goals, assisted by Miranda Blatney and Rebecca Van Eyck. Ava Haldane and Blatney then took turns setting one another up for singles. Marlee De Boer, assisted by Christensen, and Monroe, assisted by Czarina Wisse for her hat trick goal, completed the scoring.

Emma Carter put on a Petite scoring clinic with three goals and two assists as the Vernon Vikings ambushed Shuswap 8-6.

Hailey Quiring, with 1+2, Evan Koshure, Brittany Jensen and Alyssa Carter, all with a goal and assist, and Kalen Webster, with a single, rounded out the Viking attack. Defenders Josey Nerling and Bryn Taylor-Hawes helped Caenen Wisse pick up the win.

The Advertising Works Thunder Cats fell 5-3 to Shuswap #1 in Petite play Saturday at PV.

Madison Fox netted a pair and MacKenzie Munroe had a single for the Thunder Cats. Makayla Vanderzwan supplied an assist. Brooke Buller was strong in net.

In Novice action, the North Enderby Timber Flames fell 10-7 to the Shuswap Icebreakers after a hard-fought battle.

Georgia Lannon and Julie Francis scored two goals a piece, with Kaila Summerfelt, Emma Lochhead and Levi Knopf adding singles. Arriana Kostisin, Lochhead, Francis and Lannon chipped in with assists. Ashly Shwaluk was stellar in net with Katie Finlayson and Brynn Korol adding strong defence.
