Bourgeault leads VIU team at UBCO

The VIU Mariners and local Kyler Bourgeault got off to a good season start, finishing fourth in the UBC Okanagan Invitational tournament.

The VIU Mariners golf team got off to a good start with their season, finishing fourth in the UBC Okanagan Invitational tournament this past week, thanks in large part to local golfer Kyler Bourgeault.

Bourgeault, from Qualicum Beach, was Vancouver Island University’s top golfer in the tournament, firing an opening round of 67. He followed that up with a second-round score of 75. Good enough for second place in the individual scoring.

Bourgeault and the VIU Mariners are heading to the Lower Mainland this weekend, to hit the links at the Northview Golf Course in Surrey.

In a season where the Mariners could potentially earn a berth in the 2016 Canadian University/College Championships at Morningstar Golf Course, there’s plenty on the line for Bourgeault and the team, having the chance to finish the season with a tournament in their backyard.

“It’s a big motivator,” Bourgeault said. “We just have to take it one tournament at a time and not try to get too far ahead of ourselves.”

“We know that we’re a good team and we’re going to be competitive in every tournament we’re in but we just need to keep building and getting better every time we get out there.”
