Bowers Tennis Club open season with mixed mingler

Recreational group hops to draw more members this year

The Bowser Tennis Club is set to mix it up this coming weekend.

The Mixed Double’s Minglers will be taking place at the club located just behind the Bowser Legion on Saturday, May 6, starting at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“It’s basically a fun day of mixed doubles,” said Jim Lucas, BTC’s events coordinator. “The public is invited to attend if they want to sign up. It is just a day of tennis, no real competition.”

The event officially kicks off the club’s season opener. Following the “mixed mingler” there will be a potluck lunch.

The Bowser club has been around since 1992. It’s a small club compared to others like the Arrowsmith Tennis Club. It attracts members from as far as Union Bay and Spider Lake area, as well as the Qualicum Bay area, said Lucas.

Every year it averages around 35 members.

“It’s a recreational club,” said Lucas. “It’s a fun club where you can enjoy the game and also meet people.”

The club is hoping to draw new members and is also planning to set up a junior program. To join the club, the fee is $20. If you just want to play and attend the social event, the cost is $10.

“It’s more advantageous to pay for the whole year. That way you’re in for the whole summer,” said Lucas. “We have four social events and in August we have our year-end tournament.”
