After two years of hiatus, NVSS’s soccer boys have returned to shoot goals for Vanderhoof.
Hosting their first home game against Burns Lake on Oct.14, the team only had seven potential recruits last year — the minimum number is 14, said NVSS’s soccer coach Jeremy Hara.
“I was surprised there were so many players who signed up this year,” said Hara, who also coaches the school’s girls soccer team.
Although the team’s current roster of 15 to 16 players encompasses all grades from nine to 12, this year is the first soccer season for the majority of the players, as they participate in other sports such as football, hockey, and cross-country, Hara said.
“I try to keep them playing and developing off season,” he said, as he coordinates community drop-in soccer sessions throughout the summer.
Jonathan Read, a Gr. 9 member of the team, said he plans to play for NVSS every year — he had hoped to sign up in Gr. 8 as well.
“I’ve played community soccer since I was 10,” Read said.
With zone championships taking place in 100 Mile House on Oct. 31, the high school boys soccer season will finish, if qualified, at the provincial tournament during the second week of November.
So far, the team has one win against Northside Christian School, one loss against Smithers, and two losses against Burns Lake.
