Braves blank Bucs to celebrate 50th anniversary

Saanich hosts Victoria Cougars Friday night

Riley Mathieson turned aside 33 shots as the Saanich Braves celebrated their 50th anniversary in style with a 4-0 win over the visiting Nanaimo Buccaneers Friday night.

Zach Guerra scored twice for the Braves, who also received markers from Evan Abgrall and Michael Sproule. Jordan Strandlund and Trevor Owens each picked up a pair of assists.

The Braves outshot Nanaimo 55-33. Saanich is back in action Friday when they host the Victoria Cougars, 6:30 p.m. at Pearkes Arena.

The Braves hold down second spot in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League South Division, with a record of 9-11-0-1, one point up on the Cougars who have four games in hand.
