The Ravensong Breakers swim team continued their success at the Vancouver Island Championships, showing once again what this little swim team could do.
Standout swimmer Camryn Stannard won all nine events she entered, as well as swimming in three relays.
In total, Stannard swam twenty-one individual swims, all of which put her in the top three in Canada, including a few number one spots.
“The level of Island swimming is very high,” coach John Campbell said. “In fact it’s some of the highest in the country, so when there is an Island Championship, you better believe that medaling and winning is a big deal.”
“In the last Olympics, swimmers from Vancouver Island won both of Canada’s Olympic swimming medals. Nowhere else from across the country did anyone else win a medal, so that goes to show the level of competition we have here.”
Jenna Horton, an up-and-coming 11-year-old on the Breakers, also won two events: the 50M fly and 50M backstroke. She also took home silver in the 200M individual medley (IM) and the 200M fly, and earned bronze in the 100M fly.
At the top of his game once again, Jack Confortin, age 14, retained his ‘distance’ crown, winning the 1500M free, extending his undefeated streak to the entire year. He also won the 400M free and bronze in the 200M free.
Megan Romkes, 16, the youngest of the three Romkes girls to swim on the team, won gold in the 50M fly and silver in the 100M fly.
Lochlan Rogers, 10, a relative newcomer at the regional level, won his first Island Championship gold in the 100M free. He also won silver in the 100M IM and bronze in the 50M fly.
New to the team, Alexander Gerasimov, 11, won silver medals in four events: 50M free, 50M fly, 200M free and 100M free.
Jakob Brager, 12, won silver in the 200M and 400M free, as well as bronze medals in the 100M and 200M backstroke.
Tyson Krieger, 11, won two silver medals in both the 800M free and the 400M free, as well as bronze in the 100M fly.
Alex Roberts, 14, another distance specialist, won bronze in the 800M free.
Other swimmers to make finals (the top eight that swim again in their events) in this very competitive region were: Ella Confortin, 10, Jayde Herr, 11, Ben Roberts, 12, and Ethan Stannard, 13.
Leila-Indira Mohabeer-Ortiz just missed the finals in both the 100M and 200M breaststroke.
“We had more gold medals per capita than the rest of the teams on the Island,” coach Campbell said. “We’ve got 37 members, which speaks volumes to the talent we have here.”
The trio of Jack Confortin, Megan Romkes and Alex Roberts is heading to Winnipeg, having qualified for the Western Canadian Championships, February 18-21.
Romkes has also qualified for the Canadian Olympic trials in Toronto in April. This marks the 16th straight year that the Ravensong Aquatic Club has sent swimmers to national level events.
