Breaking records, Orcas swim to top

The Ladysmith Chemainus Orcas Swim Club continue to swim great times and break records.

At the Vancouver Island Regional SC Championships at the Saanich Commonwealth Pool from Jan. 21 to 23, the swimmers made a real splash.

“It went really well,” said coach Dusan Toth-Szabo.

“They had lots of best times.”

Toth-Szabo said Conrad Carlson had some of the best times this season and over all the swimmers improved.

“Maria [de Leeuw] won the 100 breaststroke in her age group and is in the top 10 in the country,” he said.

“Faith [Knelson] did awesome,” he said. “She took off many seconds on every swim.”

He said Knelson, 9, is competing against 10-year-olds.

“That one-year difference is huge at this age,” he said. “She is among the best nine-year-olds in the country.”

The next meet is Feb. 11 to 13 in Chilliwack for the B.C. AA provincials.
