It was the biggest meet of her life, and Armstrong’s Ella Brown delivered.
The 16-year-old Pleasant Valley Secondary student ranked seventh in triple jump at the Canadian Legion National Track & Field Championships Sunday in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
Brown’s leap of 11.22 metres eclipsed her personal best by 19 cm. She competed in a field of 23.
Ian Cameron, who coaches Brown at the Vernon AAA Track & Field Club, notes her achievement is all the more impressive because she has only competed in triple jump for two years.
“The most amazing thing she accomplished all summer was the amount of work she put in to enable her to do what she did at that championship,” said Brown, who was head coach of Team B.C. at the event.
“She worked so hard for the last six months; she trained on grass at PVSS, and on pavement at Polson Park.”
The Legion nationals meet attracted more than 800 athletes.
