Jordanne Hansen looks to pass out of the swarming Ballenas Whalers defense on Tuesday night. Hansen and the Kondors would lose 58-44 to the Whalers.

For the second time in four days, the Ballenas Whalers and Kwalikum Kondors senior girls basketball teams went head to head on the hardwood.

It was the Whalers senior girls squad who took home fourth place at the 61st Totem Tournament in Port Alberni, beating the Kondors in their final game.

Looking for a bit of redemption, the Kondors approached Ballenas Secondary hoping for a better outcome the second time around.

It wasn’t meant to be, as the Whalers came out with a 58-44 victory.

“It was a tough game,” Kondors head coach Butch Gayton said. “Much closer for us than the final game at the Totem Tournament, that’s for sure.”

“The Whalers are a tough matchup. They do a lot of things well and they make you pay for the mistakes you make. We gave up the ball a few times on offence and every time, they’d come down and put up points against us. It’s tough to win when you do that, but they played very well.”

The Kondors will look to bounce back this weekend as they head to Salt Spring Island for a three-day tournament.

“Good bonding time for the girls,” Gayton said. “This is a tournament I’ve been coming to for years and it’s always been one of those things that brings a team closer together. It’s right at the right time of the season too, before we gear up for the North Island and Island tournaments.”
