The 4th Annual 3-0n-3 Basketball Championships drew eight teams from Parksville Qualicum Beach, Nanaimo and Port Alberni.
The event hosted by the Arrowsmith Community Recreation Association was held at the Coombs Fairground gym on May 7, in conjunction with Youth Week.
ACRA recreation director Kim Longmuir said it was an exciting opportunity for ACRA to host the tournament as it brought youth from all over the mid-Island to share their passion for basketball.
“The play was fast and competitive, friendly and respectful, with many of the teams already talking about coming back next year,” said Longmuir. “ACRA is very grateful to dedicated volunteers and the many community volunteers and businesses that supported youth being active.”
The Bucks, Luke Linder, Zak Chang and Koen Cain from Dover Bay Secondary in Nanaimo, scored a big upset when they stopped favourites Tuff, 23-17, a team composed of members of the Kwalikum Kondors basketball team — Nolan Lewis, Felix Westermann and Furkan Elicin. The Nanaimo trio battled against the older Tuff squad and down the stretch sank key baskets from the arch that sealed them the title.
In the battle for third and fourth, it was the Double Ls of Joseph Delmo, Carter Brett, Jush Aliguyon and Braden Jupe that prevailed over the Ballers 10-8. Oceanside Splash of Logan Magel, Bryce Melnick and Wesley Horner won the consolation round when they beat Sherman’s Bulldogz 12-8.
