Burrards girls dominate at B.C. finals

Peewee girls win gold, midget girls take silver, bantam squad finishes fourth last weekend

The Ridge Meadows Burrards girls’ box lacrosse teams had a strong showing at the provincial championships in Nanaimo last weekend, with the peewee squad leading the way with a gold medal.

The peewee girls’ Burrards defeated New Westminster on Sunday by a score of 7-3 to claim the B.C. title. Paige Bell won the Warrior Sports Canada Most Valuable Player award, while Kennedy Gill was the recipient of the Warrior Sports Canada Fair Play Award.

The peewee Burrards opened the tournament with a 19-3 win over Nanaimo on Thursday, followed by their only loss of the tournament on Friday, 4-3 to New Westminster. The Burrards bounced back on Saturday with a 9-2 win over Port Coquitlam, before beating New Westminster in their rematch in the championship final on Sunday.

The midget Burrards were edged by the Burnaby Lakers 6-2 on Sunday, and settled for silver at the provincial tournament. Autumn Meredith was named the team’s most sportsmanlike player.

Ridge Meadows opened with a 10-1 win over Nanaimo, followed by a 1-0 win over New Westminster 1 on Friday afternoon. The Burrards lost 2-1 in overtime to Burnaby on Friday night, but bounced back with a 2-0 win over Port Coquitlam. However, the Burrards midget girls’ once again fell to Burnaby in the final.

In the bantam competition, the Burrards finished in fourth place after losing 3-2 in double overtime to the Burnaby Lakers. Mikayla Quinn won the fair play award for the bantam Burrards.

The bantam Burrards finished with a record of 2-3 at the tournament.
