Busy summer for Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club

It is hard to keep up to the activities of the Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club.  On June 6-7, 32 teams of mixed pairs took to the green for the Berwick, Comox Valley sponsored Scotch Pairs.

Once again the final came down to our local teams,  Vern Greenhill and April Gilchrist versus Henri Saucier and Sandy Tonnellier, in a three-end final to determine the overall winner.  Tonnellier and  Saucier were the overall winners.

Peter Harding and Carole Nelson were A event runners-up with Dean Penny and Cath Wiseman winning the B event.

Once again, the other members of our club who were not actually bowling came out in force to help with all of the hosting duties.  Keeping the refreshments available, always water at hand, and changing the equipment between games to ensure the timely tart of all the games.  Thanks also to umpire Jackie West and her helpers, Dean Penny and Frank Lo.

May 29-30 kept the green going 24 hours with the “Bowl around the Clock” fundraising event. There were 33 bowlers and they raised $700 from 4 p.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Saturday. April kept the kitchen busy to feed the crew and Frank Lo and Dean Penny kept some light on the subject.

May 28 was the annual Presidents Cup when the executives of the active clubs in the North Island Zone played two games from each team and each club had two teams. The executive of the zone is also involved.  Courtenay teams of Frank Lo (president), Archie Harris (greens manager), Myrna Viers (treasurer) and Peter Harding (games chair), Dan Bereza, (greens committee) with Carolle Allan (secretary) won all four of their games to win the trophy on home turf.  The zone  and Alberni teams each won three of their games.

In other events, locally,  the Tuesday Men’s Pairs have played four weeks and Archie Harris/Ernest Kassian lead the way with 12 points with Pete Harding/Bill Whitehouse and Vern Greenhill/Henri Saucier coming on strong with six points each.

Our new rule book says that three points will be awarded for a win and one point for a tie, so we have to change our thoughts to that format. Ladies’ Pairs have Melie Ursulom/Anne Kwasnitza tied  on top of the list with Carole Nelson/Irene Whitehouse with nine points.

Wednesday Triples after five weeks have April Gilchrist/Bev Hambly/Dennis Perrier with 12 points, Dave Hambly/Carolle Allen/Carolyn Kassian with 11 points and then we have a three way tie for 3rd place.

The Thursday 242 has novice bowler Shelley McCollum with 12 points and April Gilchrist with 10 points. The Thursday Webber Singles have Archie Harris leading with 12 points and Peter Harding close on his heels with nine points.

Travellers are off to Parksville on Monday for the first of six events (every second Monday) in the Interclub tournament.  Another trip to Parksville on Thursday, June 11, for the Annual Club Challenge and then the men go back to Parksville for the Mens Triples on the weekend while the women go to Qualicum on Friday/Saturday for Ladies Pairs.

Take a deep breath, it is a very busy season.
