Busy weekend for Kitimat’s soccer teams

"Kitimat soccer is off to a good start this year" - Herb Grant.

This weekend saw plenty of soccer action in Kitimat with two matches played.

On Saturday Kitimat women’s People of the Snow played against the Nisga’a team who drove down from the Nass Valley.

On Sunday, People of the Snow took on Kitimat’s other women’s team, Haisla Lightning.

People of the Snow won the match against the Nisga’a team 4 – 0, but couldn’t carry their form through to Sunday, narrowly losing to Haisla Lightning, the final score 3 – 2, with a hattrick scored by Lightning’s Desiree Marie and the People of the Snow’s two goals scored by Paige Payne.

People of the Snow coach Herb Grant said with four teams, two men’s and two women’s teams, he is looking forward to a good season this year.

“Kitimat soccer is off to a good start this year. Paul Gray’s hard work over the last three years has paid off,” said Grant.

He said he was also very encouraged to see how many people came out on both days to support and watch the soccer.

Grant said the resurgence of soccer in Kitimat wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the sponsors.

In addition to the sponsorship of jerseys and jackets by Daudet Contract Services, JGC-Fluor sponsored long sleeve warmup shirts, while Ledcor supplied soccer gear, cones, balls and clipboards.

He was also grateful to Coast Mountain School District for making the soccer pitch at MEMSS available to the teams.

The Kitimat teams travel to Kitwanga next to take part in the tournament on the May long weekend.
