Five athletes from Campbell River headed up to Prince George for the 2012 B.C. High School Provincial Cross Country Championships last weekend.
After a foot of snow and temperatures of -12 degrees Celsius a few days before the race, students were prepared for unusual race conditions.
Fortunately, by Saturday morning, temperatures had risen to just above freezing and the course crew had done its best to clear the snow.
The race course included a steep, muddy, slick downhill and a steep uphill with mostly compacted snow.
There were a few sections with deep slush.
The girls ran two loops for a total of 4.3 kilometres while the boys ran three loops for a total of 6.3 km.
On the boy’s side of the competition, Haven Ullstrom from Timberline placed twenty-eighth out of 264 boys running.
For the girls, Joanna Williams from Campbell River Christian School was the fastest girl north of Nanaimo, placing twenty-seventh out of 251 girls.
Josie Simpson, Megan Nuttall, and Cassidy Hinsberger represented the Carihi team.
