The Campbell River Storm clinched top spot in the North Division with their 3-2 victory over the Kerry Park Islanders on Saturday night.
Kobe Oishi opened the scoring early with a point blast, on the power play, set up by Darren Hards and Aaron Brewer. Minutes later, Hards picked up a rebound in the slot for a 2-0 lead.
Midway through the first period, Dylan McCann intercepted the puck in the d-zone and went the distance beating Isles’ goalie Matt Henwood on the glove side. That was all Campbell River needed.
Storm netminder, Chase Anderson, was the first star making some timely stops against his old teammates.
On Friday, at Rod Brind’Amour Arena, Colin Blake stole the show in a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Westshore Wolves. He scored both goals, the latter coming at 3:49 of double overtime. Blake poked the puck past the defender, Zach Benson, and went in on a breakaway. A nifty deke pulled Shawn Parkinson out of position and number 88 backhanded the puck into the open net.
Despite stringing together a long winning streak, the Storm had a number of starters out of the line-up due to injury and illness.
Dylan McCann and Darren Hards were out on Friday, Colin Blake was out on Saturday, while Mitchell Williams, Kyle Craddock and Josh Harvey missed the entire weekend. Christian Brandt was reinserted into the lineup after missing a few weeks with an upper body injury.
Starting on Sunday, the Storm have a busy week at Rod Brind’Amour Arena. On Sunday, they face the Tyee Alumni in the Cameryn’s Cause Charity game, on Monday afternoon they host the Generals, on Valentine’s Day (Tuesday) the Buccaneers are in town and on Friday, in what could a battle for first overall, the Cougars are their opponents.
