Canada advances to quarter-finals of Premier 12 baseball tourney

National team, with Taylor Green on roster, goes 5-0 in group play; meets Mexico on Nov. 16

Canada has advanced to the quarter-finals of the inaugural Premier 12 baseball tournament in Taiwan and Japan, winning all five of their Pool A games.

With Courtenay’s Taylor Green on the roster, Canada clinched the top seed in their group by defeating the Netherlands 3-1 on Nov. 15. Green saw action as a pinch hitter, going 0-for-2.

On Nov. 14 Canada blanked Italy 4-0. Other wins were 9-8 over Chinese Taipei on Nov. 12, 2-0 over Puerto Rico on Nov. 11 and 5-1 over Cuba on Nov. 10 where Green went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Canada will meet Mexico, the fourth seed from Pool B, on Nov. 16 at Intercontinental Stadium in Taichung (11:30 a.m. EST) in the quarter-finals.

The Premier 12 tourney runs till Nov. 21, with the top 12 ranked nations in the baseball world according to the WBSC ranking system competing.

Along with national pride, there is $4 million prize money at stake, with the winner taking home $1 million.

Other Nov. 16 quarter-final matches are South Korea vs. Cuba, Netherlands vs. United States and Puerto Rico vs. Japan.

 

Semifinals go Nov. 19 and Nov. 20 at the Tokyo Dome in Japan with the gold and bronze medal games Nov. 21, also at the Tokyo Dome.
