An offensive explosion in extra innings helped the Abbotsford Cardinals split a doubleheader on the road against the North Shore Twins on Saturday.
The Cards and Twins were tied 1-1 through seven innings of the opening game, but the Abbotsford bats woke up in a big way in the top of the ninth. Nic Sheehan, Gabe Gomez, Alex Massier, Ryan Lucky and Tyler Krahn drove in runs as the Cardinals scored five to take control.
Brand Molnar sealed the 6-1 win with his fourth inning of shutout ball in relief of starter Steven Federau, who had struck out seven batters over five innings.
The Twins bounced back to win the back half of the doubleheader 3-2. Lucky and Massier had RBIs for the Cardinals, who are 2-4 at this early stage of the B.C. Premier Baseball League regular season.
The Cards are home for five in a row this week at DeLair Park, beginning on Tuesday against the Coquitlam Reds (7 p.m.). Abbotsford hosts the Nanaimo Pirates on Saturday (1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.) and the Vancouver Cannons on Sunday (12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.).
