The Cariboo Youth Soccer League came together last Sunday, May 6, for the season’s first meet.
A total of 28 teams, coming from as far north as Prince George to as far south as 100 Mile, congregated at the soccer fields.
“The games went well,” one of the directors of the QYSA, Gilbert Schotel, said.
“For the most part the competition was pretty close.”
Quesnel fielded five teams: a girls and boys U12; a girls and boys U 14; and a girls U16. The boys U16, however, weren’t able to participate in the tournament.
The U16 and U14 Quesnel Denny’s Strikers came together well in the first games of the season, while the boys and the younger girls hit a few teething problems trying to mesh players who were unaccustomed to playing with each other.
The U16 girls settled in quickly, playing well for both their games. The girls came out of the gate with a 3-1 win over a Prince George team then played to a 0-0 draw against the Williams Lake team, despite keeping possession for the majority of the game.
The U14 girls hit the pitch hard, beating both Prince George and Williams Lake teams.
The U14 boys and both the U12 teams were unable to come together as a team on Sunday and as a result, all three couldn’t manage to pull off a win.
Next week, the Quesnel Denny’s Strikers will be on the road to 100 Mile, the older teams hoping to continue their performance, while the younger will be hoping the extra time on the field will show in their play.
This was the first year for Prince George to field teams in the Cariboo league.
