The UFV Cascades men’s and women’s basketball teams kept rolling over the weekend, completing a sweep of the TWU Spartans in a home-and-home battle that concluded on Saturday.
The women are red hot and are now riding a five-game winning streak after the pair of wins.
Thursday’s game in Langley saw the Cascades build an eight- point lead and hold court to cruise to the 72-61 win.
UFV’s Deanna Tuchscherer established a new record for points in a game with 35. Tuchscherer was 14 for 27 from the field and added 11 rebounds in the win.
Her 35 points overtook the previous mark of 32 that was shared by alumni Shayna Litman and Jane Meadwell. Taylor Claggett added 10 points and 15 rebounds.

The Cascades had another excellent start in Abbotsford on Saturday, jumping to a 23-10 lead after one quarter and earning the 77-60 win.
Saturday was Claggett’s turn to light up the scoreboard, as the Mission native threw up 26 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and added four blocks to lead her team to victory. Rookie guard Nikki Cabuco also had a solid game with 10 points and four steals.
Women’s head coach Al Tuchscherer said it was another strong performance from Claggett and his team.
“Taylor’s been doing that her entire career,” stated Cascades head coach Al Tuchscherer, whose charges raced out to a 19-point lead in the first half. “I thought we were really ready to go. We just built from the defensive end of the floor, and we ended up having a few nice offensive spurts that led to a pretty nice first half for us.”
The women now sit fifth in the conference with a record of 10-4.
It was a similar story for the men, who paced Thursday’s game with a 32-point first quarter and led by 15 after just 10 minutes.
The men went on to earn the 96-87 win in Langley. UFV guard Sukhjot Bains had an excellent game, collecting 26 points and 14 rebounds. Parm Bains added 22 points, while Matt Cooley contributed with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The hot play continued in Abbotsford on Saturday, as the Cascades made it rain from beyond the arc with 17 three-pointers made in a 107-95 win. The 107 points is the highest offensive output for UFV this season.
Bains led the way with 27 points, while Cooley had a strong game with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Jaskarn Bajwa also had a great game coming off the bench, with 24 points and six rebounds.

“We played a tremendous first half, and really showed what kind of offensive and defensive team we can be,” said UFV head coach Adam Friesen, whose team led 52-32 at the break. “By and large, we made them play in the halfcourt, we made Q (Spartans star Ja’Qualyn Gilbreath) have to work for his, and we played to the scouting report quite well for the rest of their players. It’s that sort of thing every week that heavily dictates outcomes of games. I’m just challenging the boys to put something closer to 40 minutes of that level of play.”
The men improved to 8-6 with the pair of wins, and have now won five in a row. They sit in eighth place in the conference.
The teams next head to Calgary for games against the Mount Royal Cougars on Friday and Saturday. They return home on Feb. 7 and 8 for games against the Regina Cougars.
