The University of the Fraser Valley men’s soccer team fashioned a promising preseason result, winning the Keg Cup tournament in Victoria on the weekend.
The Cascades knocked off the host UVic Vikes 1-0 in their opener on Saturday, and capped the event with a decisive 4-0 triumph over their local rivals from Trinity Western University on Sunday.
“A terrific performance by all of the squad this weekend and a well-deserved Cup win,” UFV head coach Alan Errington said. “The team had a great week.”
The Vikes are the defending CIS national champions, but the Cascades upset them on the strength of Dustin Wallington’s goal in the 73rd minute. Wallington converted a corner kick from Ryan Liddiard, and UFV goalie Jacob Kubanski posted the shutout. Errington said his squad “defended like a professional team” against UVic.
Trent Mayer opened the scoring against TWU in the 28th minute off a pass from Sasa Plavsic, and the Cascades took a 2-0 lead on an own goal by the Spartans prior to halftime.
Goals by Daniel Molendijk and Ethan Collins after the break rounded out the scoring, while Mark Village earned the shutout.
