Saturday marked the end of the road for the UFV Cascades women’s basketball team, after being swept by the UBC Thunderbirds with losses on home court on Friday and Saturday.
UBC eliminated UFV on Saturday with an 84-78 win, in a game that the Cascades had several chances to win.
The Cascades were up 76-73 with 32 seconds left after a Kayli Sartori lay-up gave them a fourth quarter cushion. UBC scored on their next possession, and the Cascades turned the ball over before committing a foul. UBC made one of two fouls shots and UFV couldn’t score the winning shot on their final possession.
Overtime saw both teams remain scoreless for the first 2:30, and UBC slowly took the five minute period over to win game two and eliminate the Cascades.
Three-point shooting was an issue for the Cascades, as they made only three of 17 attempts, compared to the five of 12 made by UBC.
Sartori had a strong game, with 18 points, 14 rebounds and five steals, but also missed 13 of 19 shots. Taylor Claggett added 18 points and nine rebounds. Sydney Williams was solid off the bench, with 14 points, while Shayna Cameron, playing in her final college basketball game, added 14 points and seven rebounds.
Game one on Friday saw the Cascades fall 62-48.
Turnovers plagued the Cascades, as they committed 26, and also missed eight free throw attempts. Sartori was the Cascades top player in game one, scoring 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
VOLLEYBALL TEAMS WRAP UP SEASON
Meanwhile, over at Columbia Bible College, the UFV men’s and women’s volleyball teams concluded their respective seasons.
The women scored an upset victory over the Douglas College Royals on Thursday, winning in four sets (29-27, 19-25, 25-18, 25-21). The win advanced them to the final four on Friday, where they fell in four sets (25-21, 25-23, 25-17, 25-10) to the VIU Mariners.
The women started off hot against the Mariners, and led 23-22 late in the second set but the Mariners rallied to win. The Cascades them lost 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-19) on Saturday in the bronze medal game to the Capilano Blues.
The men’s team suffered an upset loss 3-1 loss (25-23, 16-25, 25-23, 26-24) to the College of the Rockies Avalanche on Thursday. The setback ended the Cascades season.
