The Brookswood Bobcats are through to the final four.
The ’Cats seeded second at the 16-team B.C. high school AAA senior girls championships being held at Capilano University, survived a poor shooting effort to defeat the Handsworth Royals 75-65 on Thursday afternoon.
Brittney Church, Sydney Schepikoff and Katelyn Star each had 13 points as the ’Cats shot just 33.3 per cent from the field, only 21.6 from the three-point line and 47.2 per cent from the foul line.
At one point, Brookswood was shooting less around 20 per cent from the free throw line, but they rebounded to finish 17-for-36.
Zoey Haramboure fnished with 11 points and Sam Van fen Boogaard had nine.
Amberlee Kavanagh and Schepikoff each had eight rebounds, while Church had seven and Christina Brown had six.
The won largely because they finally started making their free throws, and the fact their bench outscored the Royals bench 30-8.
The game was close for the first three quarters — Handsworth led by a single point at the first and third quarter breaks, and Brookswood led by three at the half — before the Bobcats got their game on track in the fourth.
And a big reason they were able to pull out the victory was a much more respectable 12-for-18 performance from the charity stripe, compared to the 5-for-19 (26 per cent) in the first three quarters.
In Brookswood’s opening round game on Wednesday, the ’Cats tamed the Mt. Baker Wild 99-52.
The team overcame another poor shooting performance — 34 per cent from the field, 22 per cent from the three-point line and 52 per cent from the foul line — by forcing 50 turnovers.
Church scored 19 points in that game.
Brookswood will play either Claremont or Arglye in Friday’s (March 11) semifinal. The game is at 8:45 p.m.
