Cawston’s Nate Weber helped propel the Penticton Tigers AAA 13U baseball team to the AAA provincial championship in Victoria at the beginning of August.

The Tigers were a perfect 6-0 against the best Peewee teams in the province and took home the first-ever provincial championship for Penticton of the South Okanagan Minor Baseball Association.

The team beat a tough White Rock team with a walk-off home run in the semifinal and then overwhelmed the defending champs Abbotsford Angels 7-3 in the final.

“The boys worked so hard to compete against and beat the best teams in the province. They have so much fun playing the game and hanging out with each other. Its a great group of kids and families supporting them,” said John Weber, the team’s assistant coach. ” We are very proud of what they accomplished this season.”

Thirteen-year-old Weber, who currently holds the highest batting average, most hits and best on-base percentage on the team, started out playing baseball in Cawston but has played in Penticton for the last four years.

This Tigers team has placed in the top three at provincials for the past three years. But this year, the team broke through for the win at the AAA level.

The small AA association decided to take on the challenge of playing against the big AAA baseball associations on the coast and all of their work over the past year paid off with the provincial title. Nate played shortstop and led the team with the most hits (72), a .427 average, and an on-base percentage of over 500.

The Penticton Tigers went 55-15 this year playing games all over B.C., Alberta and even an elite tournament in Phoenix, Ariz.
