Cedar 12K run hotly contested

NANAIMO – A sizable field of 449 runners reached the finish line at the Cedar 12k race on Sunday.

Victoria’s Andrew McCartney was first to finish in 39 minutes, four seconds, about a minute and a half clear of the runner-up. The women’s race was won by Jen Millar, also of Victoria, who completed the distance in 44:17.

Nanaimo’s Bastion Running Club hosted the race and the top Bastion runners were Byron Trajan (42:14) in the men’s division and Cheryl Davies (50:09) for the women.

Race director John Durkin said a record 592 people registered, but the Family Day long weekend affected the number of actual participants.

The next stop on the Frontrunners Island Race Series is the Hatley Castle 8K in Victoria on Feb. 24.
