Celebrity golf tourney returning to Smithers

After a break of several years, what should be the 20th annual Celebrity Golf Tournament will be cause for 140 golfers to hit the links in Smithers this June.

The tournament was originally started to help raise funds for the Bulkley Valley Child Development Centre, and has raised tens of thousands of dollars over the years for a number of child-based causes and Rotary Club projects. The Centre purchased their current facility in 1999, with the help of over ten years of fundraising through the tournament.

Organizer Murray Hawes pointed out that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the tournament, the 30th anniversary of the Child Development Centre, and the 90th anniversary of the incorporation of Smithers, so it seemed like the perfect time to resurrect the Celebrity Tournament. Several present and past pro hockey players and possibly some former Olympians should be on the greens on June 18, he said.

“Our goal is to get 18 celebrities,” said Hawes, raising between $25,000 and $30,000.

A full weekend of activities is planned, including an autograph session.

“I think the community gets a lot out of it, and it’s a lot of fun,” said Hawes. There are roughly 120 spots for golfers, and spots can be reserved already by contacting Kim Owen at Edward Jones, 847-5755, or Bonnie McCreary at Hudson Bay Lodge, 847-4581.
