The Duncan Christian School Chargers were in the running for the Island single-A girls soccer championship in Victoria on May 9 and 10, and ended up finishing fourth at the tournament.
After a 4-0 loss to Glenlyon Norfolk School, the eventual second-place finishers, in their first pool game, the Chargers needed to beat their cross-town rivals from Queen Margaret’s School to advance to the semifinals. QMS had defeated DCS by a single goal in both regular-season games, so the Chargers knew they were up for a tough battle.
This time it was Duncan Christian’s turn to prevail as captain Anna Corbett and striker Kevannah Thorne each scored twice and Grace George added one in a 5-2 win over Queen Margaret’s.
The Chargers fell to St. Andrew’s 5-0 in their semifinal, then lost 4-1 to North Island Secondary in the third/fourth game, with Thorne scoring the lone goal for DCS. St. Andrew’s beat NISS 1-0 in the final, and both teams will head to Nakusp for provincials this coming weekend.
Coaches Ivan Schulz and Clay Theckston are bidding farewell to eight Grade 12s who have played for the school for the last five years: Chelsea Day, Anna Corbett, Rebekah Lewis, Jessica Caron, Emily Neufeld, Hannah Downie, Makayla Joe George and Phyliss Jack.
