Chilliwack FC’s Pacific Coast Soccer League men picked up a valuable point Sunday, battling the Abbotsford Mariners to a 1-1 draw on the road.
After losing 4-0 at home to those same Mariners early in the season, the result was satisfying for the locals.
The Mariners pressed hard in the opening 15 minutes, but it was Chilliwack opening the scoring at the 20 minute mark on a stroke by Jason Staiger. Fullback Alex Vogt started the play, sliding the ball into the 18-yard box where Staiger was waiting to one-time a shot past the Abby keeper.
The Mariners equalized just before halftime.
In the second half, both Meekaylae Renaerts and Yen Westeringh narrowly missed shots from 25 yards out that would have given Chilliwack the lead.
At the other end, 17-year-old keeper Jon Vugteveen made two point-blank stops to preserve the draw.
Chilliwack’s next game is June 11, on the road versus Richmond’s TSS Academy.
