Chilliwack Chiefs go winless on Vancouver Island road trip

The BCHL junior A club dropped weekend games at Powell River, Cowichan Valley and Nanaimo.

The Chilliwack Chiefs swung and missed three times on a winless journey through the Coastal conference last weekend.

The BCHL club hit the ice Friday night in Powell River, taking on the Kings at the Hap Parker Arena.

The Chiefs led 2-1 early in the second period after a goal by defenceman Cooper Moore, but things fell apart from there. Powell River scored four unanswered in the middle frame, cruising to a 5-2 win.

Peter Reynolds scored the other Chilliwack goal, his first junior A tally.

Kolby Thornton got the start in goal, stopping 28 of 33 shots. Levi Glasman and Nic Porchetta beat him twice with Reilly Moran adding a single.

Thornton was back in action Saturday at Cowichan Valley, and he was busy, facing 36 pucks.

The Caps out-shot the Chiefs 36-20 as they skated to a 4-2 win at the Cowichan Community Centre. Brady Lynn and Will Arquiett scored two apiece for the victors, who led 3-0 through 40 minutes.

Jacob Slipec’s first of the season got Chilliwack on the board 3:45 into period three and Brett Willits also scored for the Chiefs, who carried on to Nanaimo for a tough Sunday afternoon tilt.

Chilliwack may have produced their best effort against the Clippers, despite playing their third game in two-and-a-half days.

Rookie Dylan Black got off to a rough start in net, giving up first period goals to Kyler Kovich and Tyler Williams.

But the netminder settled in and wasn’t beaten again.

Ethan Scardina scored the third Nanaimo goal into an empty net with the Clippers leading 2-1 late in the final frame.

Kyle Penney scored one of the Chilliwack goals on a second period power play, and Arlo Merritt collected his first BCHL goal in the final minute of the game.

The Chiefs finally get a home game this weekend as they welcome the defending champion Prince George Spruce Kings to the Chilliwack Coliseum for a Friday night tilt.

Game time is at 7 p.m.
