The first Master’s bonspiel of 2014 year ended Jan. 8 in Cloverdale, where the Ellis rink from Chilliwack has won the top honours.
Twenty-four teams from Chilliwack, White Rock, Langley, Tsawassen, Coquitlam, Richmond and Cloverdale competed in the three-day event, culminating with the team of skip Bill Ellis, third Rich Yule, second Dennis Padgham, and lead Ken Strueby heading the field with four wins and a tie.
In second place was the Doug Spencer team from Langley and, in third place, the Barry Vaughan team, also from Langley.
Ellis and Spencer finished with identical records and the winner was decided on points won during the five games.
The Master’s classification is for men aged 60 years and over – bonspiel participants ranged from 60 to nearly 90 years of age. Don England, Bonspiel Chairman, presented the prizes and said, “It was a special year without any floods, fire or freezing temperatures….it was just fun.”
