Three Chilliwack skaters will lace ‘em up in national competition as the Fraser Valley Phantom midget AAA female hockey team guns for a Canadian title.
Hailey Smyl, Gabrielle Roy and Brianna Keats helped the Phantom to their second straight provincial title April 5.
The Phantom beat the Kelowna Rockets 2-0 in a best-of-three championship series, winning by scores of 2-1 (in overtime) and 5-1.
Keats had the OT winner in game one, tipping a Jodi Gentile shot past the Kelowna keeper. Smyl had the other Phantom tally in game one and added another in the first period of game two.
Smyl and Roy formed two thirds of a devastating top line (along with Sim Sidhu) that produced four of the seven Phantom goals.
They’ll need to keep the offence rolling as they move into the Esso Cup playoffs.
Game one sees them taking on the Edmonton Thunder April 21 at the Bill Copeland Arena in Burnaby.
The winner of that game will be crowned the Pacific Regional champion.
The Phantom will then play the Quebec champ April 22 and the Western champ April 23.
They’ll see the Atlantic champ April 24 and the Ontario champ April 25 to complete a grueling five games in five days schedule.
The Phantom are the official ‘host team,’ even though all games are being played in Burnaby.
