Chilliwack’s Kate Stuart shuts out Manitoba at nationals

Chilliwack’s Kate Stuart has backstopped Team B.C. to a 3-0 shutout of Team Manitoba at the 2017 National Women’s U-18 Hockey Championships.

The teams squared off Thursday morning at the Pavillon de la jeunesse in Quebec City, Quebec.

Making her first appearance in the tournament, Stuart stopped 13 shots for the goose-egg, the second in as many days for Team B.C.

Stuart’s goal-crease companion, Kamloops native Kendra Woodland, stopped 28 pucks Wednesday in a 2-0 victory over Team Saskatchewan.

Team B.C. will wrap up the preliminary round Friday afternoon, 4:30 p.m. PST, with a game against Quebec.

While B.C. and Quebec battle for first place in their pool, the other side includes Alberta, Ontario Blue, Ontario Red and Atlantic.

Once the preliminary round is done, semi-finals will take place Saturday at 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. PST.

The bronze medal match goes Sunday morning at 9 a.m. PST followed by the gold medal match at noon PST.

This is Stuart’s second time playing in this tournament.

She split the duties with Woodland last year, posting a 2.94 goals-against average and .916 save percentage as Team B.C. earned a bronze medal in Regina.

Stuart is playing in Ontario’s Provincial Women’s Hockey League this year where she has made three appearances, winning two with a miniscule 0.98 goals-against average and .954 save percentage.
