Glen Ford’s Chilliwack Curling Club rink came up short at last week’s Lower Mainland mixed playdown, failing to qualify for provincials.
Joined by Victoria Murphy (third), Steve Strathdee (second) and Sheila Ford (lead) and curling on home ice at the Chilliwack Curling Club, the local team stumbled out of the gate with a 5-3 loss in their opener.
That knocked them out of contention in the A event.
Bumped into the B bracket, Ford’s crew responded by hammering Keith Switzer’s Vancouver/Richmond rink 10-4.
But an 8-4 quarter-final loss to Delta’s Alan Roemer sent them spiralling into the D bracket and their last chance to qualify.
Wins over Aaron Simpson (7-6) and Travis Cameron (6-4) got them into the semi-final where they were stopped by Andrew Forrest (Vancouver/Richmond).
While Ford mustered two points in the third end, Forrest scored at least one point in each of the other six ends, cruising to a 7-2 victory and the last provincial berth.
Aaron Simpson’s rink, also representing the Chilliwack Curling Club, went 1-3. Joined by Joanne Kern (third), Ron Phillip (second) and Sherry Proudfoot (lead), they scored their lone victory with an 8-5 win over Switzer.
