Chilliwack FC grad Jordyn Huitema scored for Canada in a 2-1 win over Haiti Tuesday at the Concacaf Women’s U-17 Championship in Bradenton, Florida.
The win gave the Canadians bronze in the tournament and qualified her crew for the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, a 13 team tournament that will run from Nov. 13 to Dec. 1 in the Uruguay cities of Colonia del Sacramento, Montevideo, and Maldonado.
Huitema opened the scoring in the 48th minute against Haiti. Teammate Caitlin Shaw rainbowed a long ball over the heads of Haiti’s defenders to Huitema, who side-footed the ball past Haitian keeper Madelina Fleuriot.
It was Huitema’s first goal in four tournament matches, and she followed up drawing an assist on the game winner by Andersen Williams, getting her head on a Julianne Vallerand corner kick and knocking it to Williams at the side of the net.
“Within this tournament, there have been opportunities for the players to learn and that has been evident from the first match,” said Canadian coach Bev Priestman. “That learning must continue as the players push to get better along their journey to Canada Soccer’s women’s national team.”
