Chilliwack’s Jordyn Huitema leads Canada to FIFA U-17 World Cup semi-final

Her team will take on Mexico in one Wednesday semi while New Zealand and Spain battle in the other.

Chilliwack’s Jordyn Huitema has her team through to the semi-final round at the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup soccer tournament in Uruguay.

Huitema, the captain of the Canadian team, scored a dramatic game winner against Germany on Sunday. Huitema finished a feed from teammate Kaila Novak in the 83rd minute, launching a left-foot strike from the penalty spot that rocketed past the German keeper.

Canada won the match 1-0, improving their record to 3-1 as they head into a Wednesday knockout game against Mexico.

Huitema has three goals in four outings, third most in the tournament behind Ghana’s Mukarama Abdulai and Spain’s Claudia Pina.

The Mexican team that Huitema’s crew faces today is 2-2 overall and earned their way into the match versus Canada with a 4-2 penalty-kicks win over Ghana in the quarter-final round.

The winner of Canada/Mexico will get the winner of Spain/New Zealand in the final, which will be played Saturday.

Spain handed Canada its lone loss of the tournament, a 5-0 defeat in the last group-stage match.
