Chilliwack’s Kennedy Prachnau to play in B.C. Hockey’s Winter Classic

Prachnau and her Greater Vancouver Comets embark on a northern adventure to Fort St. James

Chilliwack’s Kennedy Prachnau will lace up her skates in Fort St. James next month, playing in the B.C. Hockey Winter Classic.

The defenceman for the B.C. Female Midget AAA Hockey League’s Great Vancouver Comets leads her team into battle against the Northern Capitals in a game that will be played at the Ernie Sam Memorial Arena on Nak’azdli Whut’en territory.

The first annual Winter Classic was held last year and featured the B.C. Major Midget Hockey Leaguer’s Cariboo Cougars and Vancouver Northeast Chiefs.

This year’s game is Jan. 19 but Prachnau’s team travels to the area on Jan. 16 where they will also take part in community outreach opportunities in Vanderhoof and Fort St. John.

According to a B.C. Hockey release, ‘Coaches and team leadership will help local coaches conduct on-ice practices at the atom, peewee, bantam and midget levels and attend schools to promote the sport of hockey and healthy, active living to elementary-age kids.’

Kennedy is a 16 year old on a team of 16 and 17 year olds. In 14 games this season on the Comets D, the teenager has collected one goal, three points and four penalty minutes.
