Chilliwack’s Stephanie Prinse and Rhys Gamache from the Golden Ears Winter Club finished 4-3, bowing out after round-robin play at last weekend’s B.C. Mixed Doubles Championship.
The bonspiel was held at the Hope Curling Club, with a field that was 16 teams strong. Prinse and Gamache started well last Wednesday with a 7-4 win over Abbotsford’s Debbie and Dean Geiger, followed by a 9-1 blowout of Allison DenToom/David Marchant (Vancouver) Thursday morning.
A 10-5 triumph over Hope’s Debbie McKinney and Terry Foord had Prinse and Gamache looking like title contenders at 3-0, but everything collapsed from there.
The locals fell 8-1 to Royal City’s Shannon Ward and Robbie Gallaugher rink Thursday night in a match that lasted just three ends. They led Troy Cowan/Kayla Wilson (Victoria/Delta) 7-4 through six ends in a Friday afternoon battle and lost 9-7.
Prinse and Gamache got back on track with an 8-5 win over Tunnel Town’s Shawna Jensen and Connor Deane, but ended with a loss Saturday morning, falling 6-4 to Victoria’s Carley Sandwith and Cameron De Jong.
Only four of the 16 teams advanced to the championship round and Prinse/Gamache were left on the outside looking in.
The duo of Steph Jackson-Baier and Corey Chester (Victoria) ended up taking the title with a 6-3 win over Sandwith/De John, capping a perfect tournament where they went 9-0.
