The Charles Hays Secondary School soccer team wrapped up their season at the provincial tournament which took place in Burnaby from Nov. 20-22. Even though they finished with a record of 1-4, and placed 14th out of 15 teams, interim head coach Gordon Eshon said the team put forward an effort they should be proud of.
“They can walk away with their heads held high,” he said. “They represented themselves and Prince Rupert very well.”
The Rainmakers’ first game was against the defending provincial champions, St. Michaels University School. Eshon said St. Michaels dominated the possesion of playing, only giving the ball up for approximately 10 minutes the whole game. He said even though CHSS lost 2-0, the score could have been much worse, and the team did well to stay as close as they did against such a strong team.
“They could have lost that game 10-0 no problem,” he said. “We did really well.”
Eshon said his team faced the same scenario against Hugh McRobert, the second team they faced in the tournament. The Rainmakers were able to control more than in the first game, but weren’t able to convert on the opportunities they produced, eventually losing 3-0.
“They just couldn’t find the back of the net,” he said. “They only had a few chances and they knew going into the tournament they had to capitalize on the chances they had.”
CHSS battled hard in their third and fourth games, losing in a back-and-forth contest to Thomas Haney 5-2 before winning decisively against Dawson Creek 4-0. Eshon said the team gained confidence after scoring their first goals against Thomas Haney and the momentum carried over into their game against Dawson Creek.
“We controlled the ball for about 60 minutes of that game,” he said. “And we were able to find the back of the net.”
