CIS career ends for ex-Sardis soccer star

Chilliwack's Danika Snook ended her CIS soccer career last weekend, with her University of the Fraser Valley team losing in Edmonton.

Chilliwack’s Danika Snook ended her university soccer career on the road, playing her final game at Edmonton’s Foote Field.

Snook and her University of the Fraser Valley Cascades took on the University of Alberta Pandas in a Canada West quarter-final Saturday.

The second-seeded Pandas edged the seventh-seeded Cascades 2-1.

UFV held their own in the first half, going toe-to-toe with the powerhouse Pandas. The Cascades nearly opened the scoring on a free kick, then watched the home side break the ice on a strike by  Edmonton native Jesse Candlish.

Panda keeper Kelti Biggs started the play with a big boot to Julia Ignacio.

Ignacio carried down the left wing and crossed to Candlish, who beat UFV keeper Kayla Klim (Burnaby) with a well-placed shot.

Seconds before halftime, UFV drew even on a Jade Palm (Powell River) tally. Abbotsford native Paige Friesen pouned a corner-kick into the box, where Palm headed it home.

The Pandas got the game winner in the 72nd minute, with St. Albert native Terri Kutryk beating Klim with a rocket into the bottom right corner of the net.

As for Snook, the former Sardis secondary school Falcon “left everything on the field,” according to UFV coach Rob Giesbrecht.
