Clapp one shot shy at Saputo Vancouver Open

Chilliwack's Brad Clapp started and finished strong at the Saputo Vancouver Open, but a tepid middle round hurt him in the end.

Brad Clapp came up one stroke short, finishing in a three-way tie for fourth at the Saputo Vancouver Open.

The Chilliwack Golf and Country Club golfer came out on fire in the latest Vancouver Golf Tour event, firing an eight-under-par 63 to lead the field after Thursday’s opening round. Round one was played at Vancouver’s McCleery Golf Course.

Clapp eagled the first hole and birdied seven others to set the pace.

Round two shifted to Vancouver’s Langara Golf Course, where Clapp struggled to a one-under-par 70. Clapp birdied the second, ninth, 11th and 13th holes, but bogied three others. Eventual tournament winner Christopher Epperson made his move, leap-frogging Clapp with a seven-under-par 64 that included five birdies and an eagle.

Saturday’s final round was played at Vancouver’s Fraserview Golf Course.

Clapp birdied six holes en-route to a four-under-par 68. But bogies on the 10th and 13th holes proved fatal, providing Epperson his narrow margin of victory.

Abbotsford’s Nick Taylor was tied for second, alongside Comox golfer Riley Wheeldon.

Clapp tied with Surrey’s Clark MacPherson and San Jose native Mark Hubbard.
