I can not think of anything more fun than hurling an 18kg stone down 45m of ice in an attempt to take out your opponent or to sneak in behind to steal a point.
For 60 curlers over three days that was the objective. The 2020 Ladies Bonspiel was great fun and a great success. Curlers came from 100 Mile House, Kamloops, Jasper, Vernon and Hinton to join the local Clearwater curlers in friendly games, wild dancing and a delicious dinner.
This year the Clearwater teams scooped all the trophies but the 100 Mile House teams gave them a good run for their money in the finals. The Graffunder Rink won the “A Event” sponsored by Century 21 Rison Realty, the McNeil Rink won the “B Event” sponsored by Pharmasave and the Hadley Rink took the “C Event” sponsored by Clearwater Glass.
There were some incredible shots made throughout the bonspiel and lots of after-hours stories that will be talked about until next year. In last week’s newspaper the picture of the team in their Lego costumes was of the Fraser rink, who won the “best team costume”.
A big thank-you goes out to Roger Mayer and the Sportsplex employees who did their bit to make the bonspiel a success, to Ron Hadley for wearing the many hats of MC, official rules guy and ice maintenance, to Kevin Sauer for helping Ron with the ice all weekend and to Jan Johnston who organized the trophies and gorgeous prizes. Thanks to the many Wells Gray Curling Club members who decorated and cleaned up the lounge, worked the bar, handled registration, made the fabulous dinner and participated in the bonspiel. Couldn’t do it without you. Until next year “Hurry Hard” and “Sweep”.
