The Nanaimo Clippers play their home games on the traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation, and they’ll recognize that on a special night this month.
The junior A hockey club announced today that it will host Snuneymuxw First Nation Night on Feb. 15 when the Nanaimo Clippers host the Powell River Kings at Frank Crane Arena.
The Clippers will wear special jerseys with Coast Salish artwork by Noel Brown, and the jerseys will be auctioned off afterward with proceeds donated for sports equipment for the Snuneymuxw.
The game is being presented in partnership with Island Savings.
“This is something we have been working with Island Savings and Snuneymuxw First Nation chief and councillors for quite some time and are really excited to see it coming together,” said Tali Campbell, Clippers general manager, in a press release.
Including Snuneymuxw culture at the Feb. 15 game will foster inclusivity, said Chief Mike Wyse in the release.
“Snuneymuxw is appreciative of our partnership with the Nanaimo Clippers that supports the advancement of reconciliation in Nanaimo,” Wyse said.
Island Savings president Kendall Gross said supporting the special event and helping to raise awareness about Snuneymuxw culture and history is a great honour.
GAME ON … The Clippers are on the road this coming weekend, Feb. 7-9, taking on the Vernon Vipers, Chilliwack Chiefs and Surrey Eagles. The following weekend, the Clippers host the Cowichan Valley Capitals on Friday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena, then take on the Kings on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane.
