Club girls claim another Island title

Mariners U15 AA team undefeated at regional tourney in Nanaimo

The Mariners Volleyball Club concluded regional playoffs with another Island championship.

The Mariners U15 AA girls won their tournament Saturday at the Vancouver Island University gym, sweeping past the Westshore Twisted Sisters in the final, 25-23, 25-19.

The Nanaimo team went 3-0 in the round robin, including a three-set victory over Westshore, but the Mariners won more convincingly later that afternoon when the Island championship was on the line.

The Nanaimo club had three other teams competing at Islands at VIU on the weekend.

The Mariners Volleyball Club U16 AA squad was runner-up at Sunday’s tournament, as it was edged by Westshore in three sets, 25-19, 25-27, 15-13. The Mariners Red team had won its three previous matches at Islands.

In U16 single-A action on Sunday, the Mariners White team finished fourth, dropping the bronze-medal match against the Comox Valley Strikers by scores of 25-21, 25-17. The M’s narrowly missed out on reaching the final, losing in three sets to the Campbell River Crush, 25-19, 18-25, 15-10.

Also this past weekend, the Mariners U15 single-A girls finished fifth at Islands, ending their tournament Saturday with a 25-8, 25-12 victory over the Comox Valley Strikers White team.

At provincial championships in Abbotsford, the U14 Mariners were fifth in Div. 3, Tier 1 and another Mariners entry was fourth in Div. 3, Tier 2. The Mariners also had a squad in U14 Div. 4 that finished second in Tier 2.

The Mariners Volleyball Club U13 boys placed fourth in Tier 2.
