Rossland REC Spring Brochure
The REC Department will start working on the Spring Brochure and if you’re interested in submitting a program or course, the deadline for the Spring Brochure is March 1, 2014.
The brochure will hopefully be available to the public online, by the third week of March.
Typically our Spring Brochure covers the months of April, May and June with many Rossland Pool details included. Spring Break will run March 17-28.
If you are interested in running a Spring Break Camp let us know as soon as possible so we can work out details and start advertising right away.
We are always happy to add information regarding community groups and resources in the Community Events & Info pages!
Adult Co-Ed REC Hockey
Adult Co-Ed Recreation Hockey is at the Rossland Arena on Tuesday nights from 9:45-11:00pm and on Sunday nights from 9:15-10:30pm.
Join a great group of people for fun, co-ed hockey. Full equipment is required and some experience is necessary. A waiver must be signed prior to getting on the ice.
Drop in is $10.00 and 10x passes are available from the REC Department.

Language Classes with Selkirk College – starting soon!
Spanish for Travellers Level 1 – If you know little or no Spanish but would like to learn, this is a great place to start. The Instructor will teach you the basics with an emphasis on conversation. Course runs Mondays and Wednesdays, February 24 to March 10 from 7:30-8:30pm, at RSS in room 308.
French Level Two takes you to the next step in your French language studies, building on Level 1 with more sounds, sentences and dialogues. Course starts February 24 and runs until March 10 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:15-7:15pm at RSS in room 308.
3-D Pottery Snowman Workshops
The Pottery courses with Sarah Zanussi are on Wednesday February 19. Children will learn how to make 3-dimensional snowmen by using pinch pot techniques. This is a fun, creative class for enthusiastic artists. The one day workshop for children ages 4-6 is full, but there are spaces available in the workshop for children ages 7-12. Please contact the Recreation Department for specific workshop times.
Beginner Media Class for Artists 6-12 years, starts Monday, February 17
This is an excellent introduction to making movies or a chance to create one that you’ve been thinking about for a while. The focus will be mainly stop action animation and live action with green screen effects. Participants will have the opportunity to add sound and text to their creations. The class runs Mondays from 5:15-6:15pm starting Monday, February 17 until March 11.
Joe Hill Coffee House, Sunday February 16, Celebrating Pete Seeger
Today (Sunday) performers at Rossland’s Joe Hill Coffee House will be celebrating the songs of the late, great, Pete Seeger.
Be prepared to sing! The Joe Hill Coffee House is Rossland’s monthly community venue for talent throughout the Kootenays and happens the third Sunday of every month.
Doors open at 6:00pm and the show starts at 7:00pm. Admission is $3.00 for adults and kids and students get in free.
REDroc Modern Jive for Beginners
Check out the Tuesday beginner dance class at the Miners Hall! Discover Modern Jive – a creative, stylish and constantly evolving style of dance that doesn’t require tricky footwork or a partner! Loved by people of all ages, abilities and musical tastes! Every Tuesday night at the Miners Hall at 7:00pm. Cost is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students.
The Rossland Youth Action Network
The Rossland Youth Action Network’s aim is to “increase activities for youth in the community and support opportunities and services for youth aged 12 -18 years old.” This goal has been made possible by the Columbia Basin Trust, who support the Network with their Community Directed Youth Funds.
Parkour, the “Art of Movement”
Mondays and Thursdays, 7:00pm at the RSS Auditorium, starting Monday February 3, 2014
Involvement in Parkour requires consistent, disciplined training with an emphasis on functional strength, physical conditioning, balance, creativity, fluidity, control, precision, spatial awareness and looking beyond the traditional use of objects.
In partnership with the Rossland Council for Arts & Culture, there are lots of amazing film courses for youth coming up!
Introduction to Digital Film Making – this course was postponed and will be offered in the future.
February 8th 10:0am – 3pm at the Miners Hall
This workshop is for youth with intermediate skills, but advanced filmmakers are encouraged to come. It will cover al lthe bases, including pre-production, production and post-production.
Ski / Snowboard Film and the Importance of Storyline
March 15th 7:30-9:00pm at the Miners Hall
Join internationally renowned ski photographer Mark Shapiro for an evening of watching new ski/snowboard films shot by film wizard Guido Perrini, followed by a discussion of the merits of a solid story and some great camera work.
Film Special Effects
April 5, 10:00am – 3:00pm at the Miners Hall
Get your film in tip top shape for entry into the U10 Film Festival. Give it the edge it needs by learning special effects.
Rossland Seniors
The Rossland Seniors Hall has lots of great activities running through the week! On Mondays at 1:30pm the Rossland Seniors Art Club meets. Contact Edith Harasin at 250-362-5477 for more information. On Monday evenings, the Rossland Quilters Guild gets together at 7:00pm. Contact Deyanne Davies at 250-362-7727 for more information. On Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm the Rossland Golden City Old Time Fiddlers practice and play. The public are welcome to sit in and listen to the old time fiddlers play their music. Visitors should contact Richie Mann before going to the Hall. Contact Richie or Audrey at 250-362-9465. On Thursdays between 9:30-11:00am join the Seniors for stretching exercises and morning tea and snacks.
Rossland Public Library Check out the Library’s website for a complete listing of the programs they’re running. Lego Club, Teen Night, Storytime, French Club, Movies & Munchies, NFB Film Club, Book Club, and Cocoa and Movies during Winter Carnival are some of the great programs running in January. On Sunday, February 9 there’s a Wet Felting workshop with Tricia Rasku that will have participants making a scarf. |
