The Vernon Coca-Cola Tier 2 Vipers lost 6-2 to the Vancouver Thunderbirds in Monday night’s final of the 18th Abbotsford Midget Memorial Hockey Tournament.
Game MVP Bryton Stead and Dex Elders scored for the Vipers, who got two assists from Kyle Sherwood. Vernon is coached by Michael Sherwood, Rob Ferguson and Prentice Swiscoski.
Vernon stopped the Merritt Centennials 3-1 in the semifinals, goals coming from Cordell Oppenheimer, Easton Jones and Brian Ferguson. Goalie Billy Hawthorn was named MVP.
The Coke crew opened by bouncing Burnaby Bulldogs 7-1 behind two goals from Stead, 1+2 from MVP Sherwood and other goals by Jarret Campbell, Elders, Ferguson and Julian Darkazanli.
Vernon then tied Cloverdale 4-4 with Campbell, Jayden Pedersen, Stead and Austin Derkach supplying snipes. Ferguson earned MVP.
Oppenheimer pocketed MVP with 2+1 as the Vipers iced North Delta 6-1. Pedersen added 1+2, while Elders, Sherwood and Stead had singles. Harvey Pawsey had two helpers.
The Nixon Wenger Tier 2 Pee Wee Vipers went 0-3 in the Kelowna Tournament, finishing play Sunday with a 4-2 loss to Trail.
Owen Palfreyman and Emma Elders scored in support of Aidan Spraggs. Connor Hansen took game MVP.
Semiahmoo Ravens of White Rock ambushed Vernon 13-1 with Jacob Green connecting from Maisun Ang-Hamilton and Owen Swiscoski. MVP went to Elders.
Boise, Idaho stuffed Vernon 7-1 with MVP Porter Trevelyan scoring for the Vipers from Ronac Chauhan and Hansen.
The Sladen Moore Atom/Pee Wee Laker Lakers girls went winless in four games at the Kamloops Female Pee Wee Tournament.
Mario Richard’s Lakers faced a huge challenge playing against teams made up of all Pee Wee players but they never quit.
Kamloops shut out Vernon 3-0 with MVP going to Jaya Chauhan and the Sportsmanship award to Robyn Alexis.
Kelowna stopped Vernon 13-0 with Abby Lawlor gaining MVP and goalie Katrina Winstanley and Mackenzie Miller sharing Sportsmanship honours.
In Game 3, the Sladen Moore girls bowed 11-0 to Langley. Kristi Vassberg took MVP, while Sarah Claeys pocketed the Sportsmanship.
Langley grounded Vernon 14-0 with MVP going to Shelby Richard and Sportsmanship to Camryn Beacom.
The Lakers also enjoyed a Four Nations Cup game Friday afternoon between the U.S. and Sweden, while some players took in the thrilling gold-medal Canada-U.S. tilt Saturday night.
The 10-team Vernon Atom Rec Tournament opens today with four local teams and other entries from Abbotsford, Penticton, West Kelowna, Kamloops, Kelowna and Winfield.
The Vernon House Ice Pirates face Kelowna at 4:30 p.m. (Civic), while the Vernon Warriors play West Kelowna at 4:45 (PV), the Vernon Blackhawks tangle with Kamloops at 5:45 (Civic) and the Vernon Red Devils face Penticton at 6:30 (PV).
